Clear skies as cleanup begins

A pedestrian makes his way along Princess Avenue as a snow removal contractor fires up his snowblower on 11th Street on Monday. Southern Manitoba was hit with a severe winter storm, which blanketed the Wheat City with close to 25 cm of snow.

Below-normal temperatures are settling in after yesterday's dump of snow, but maybe some sun will make everything feel better.

Environment Canada says that 18.4 cm of snow fell between midnight and midnight yesterday — demolishing the previous record of 3 cm for the day, set back in 1968.

Areas further south received even more snow — Cypress River reported nearly double Brandon's amount, with 34 cm blanketing the community.

Snow trailed off after midnight last night, however, and Tuesday dawned fairly bright, with a mix of sun and cloud expected throughout the day and a high of -8 C.

After dipping tonight to about -13 C, tomorrow should be about the same as today: a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -7 C.

Thursday, although the temperature will be about the same, could see a 60 per cent chance of flurries.

Things do look to improve for Friday, though. At this point, the forecast calls for sun on Friday and all the way through the weekend, with a high of -3 C on Friday and temperatures peeking into the positive digits for Saturday (high of +3 C) and Sunday (high of +1 C).

The normal high for this time of year is -3 C. The normal low is -13 C.
