In this Sunday, March 10, 2013 photo taken with a 600-millimeter telephoto lens, comet Pan-STARRS appears between the clouds low in the western sky as seen from Harrells, N.C. The comet, which was closest to the sun on Sunday, is expected to become more easily visible to observers in the Northern Hemisphere during the coming week.

The last of the light snow — for a couple of days, at least — should taper off this morning, and skies should clear for the rest of the day, but temperatures are set to plunge.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of -7 C this afternoon, with a UV Index, believe it or not, of 3, which is considered moderate.

Clear skies this evening should give Westman residents their first chance to capture a glimpse of Comet Pan-Starrs. The comet, relatively dim but visible to the naked eye, is only visible for about half an hour, shortly after sunset, due west. Sunset is at 7:39 p.m. tonight.

The comet can be easily found near the thin crescent moon, if you have an unobstructed view of the western horizon. Despite being washed out by twilight, it should be about as bright as the brightest stars, with a short stubby tail that extends up and to the left.

Crisp weather for comet-watching heralds a dip in the mercury as well. Temperatures are expected to hit -18 C overnight tonight.

After a brief resite on Wednesday (mix of sun and cloud with a high of -3 C) and Thursday (sunny, with a high of -4 C), icy cold is predicted to settle in ahead of the weekend.

The current forecast calls for a chance of flurries on Friday, with a high of -13 C on both Friday and Saturday. Overnight Friday night, the temperature could drop to -23 C.

Things should improve after that, with forecast highs around -7 C on Sunday and Monday.

The normal high for this time of year is -1 C, the normal low is -12 C.
