Cold again today, snow again tomorrow

One last day of bitter cold is in store for Brandon before a snowstorm brings a bit of milder air tomorrow — but after that, it's back to the deep freeze.

Environment Canada says that morning temperatures dipped below -35ºC this today, within a couple of degrees of a record cold. But the mercury should recover a bit this afternoon, under sunny skies, up to a high of about -20ºC.

So cold for so long

According to Environment Canada, the normal high for this time of year is -12ºC and the normal low is -22ºC. But Brandon has been stuck in a deep freeze.

As of Thursday morning, the daily high temperature has been stuck below the normal low for 115 straight hours — that's since last Saturday afternoon.

That'll stick around most of the night, with an overnight low tonight of -21ºC. Increasing cloudiness is expected this evening with a 60 per cent chance of flurries overnight.

Winds will pick up overnight, as temperature rises before dawn to about -12ºC.

Friday will see some snow, at times heavy, with total accumulations of 5–10 cm. Easterly winds at 20 km/h will cause some trouble with visibility through the day as well. Those winds will pick up to 30 km/h from the northeast, gusting to 50 km/h by the afternoon.

The Friday high will be -8ºC, but that won't last. Sunny skies are expected to return for the weekend, with a high of -22ºC on Saturday, then a high of -27ºC on Sunday. Weekend lows are expected to be -30ºC or lower.

It's not much better until the middle of next week. Monday and Tuesday should be sunny as well, with a high of -26ºC on Monday, then a high of -22ºC on Tuesday.

At this point, next Wendesday looks to be sunny, too, with a high of -18ºC.

The normal high for this time of year is -12ºC; the normal low is -22ºC.

The coldest it's ever been on this date was in 1966, when it dropped to -37.2ºC. The warmest ever was in 1944, when it was 5ºC.
