Cold today — and until Friday

It's cold today, and tomorrow … and most of the week.

Envinronment Canada is calling for temperatures of -26ºC this afternoon, with wind chills pushing -38, as skies clear and wind picks up to about 20 km/h from the west this afternoon.

Tonight should stay clear, and winds will lighten after midnight. Temperatures will drop to -36ºC overnight.

For New Year's Eve, it's more chill predicted. Mainly sunny skies are expected, with a high of just -28ºC, and a low of -30ºC that night.

Things do start to improve in the first few days of 2014. New Year's Day will be sunny, with a high of -25ºC, followed by more sun and ahigh of -22ºC on Thursday.

Friday will be substantially warmer, with a high that day of -9ºC, although it will also be cloudy and there's a 70 per cent chance of flurries that day.

Saturday, too will see clouds and a good chance of flurries, with temperatures steady around -18ºC.

Sunday should see some sun, with a high of -19ºC.

The normal high for this time of year is -12ºC; the normal low is -22ºC

The coldest it's ever been on this date was in 1990, when it was -39.7ºC. The warmest ever was in 1956, when it was 2.8ºC.
