Brandon Sun - ONLINE EDITION

Construction continues to lag this year

A poor November has Brandon builders falling further behind the pace set in 2012, but residential construction continues to be a significant bright spot.

There were fewer construction permits issued last month than there were a year earlier, and they were worth less than half as much.

In total, there were 68 permits issued in November, worth about $6.1 million. That's down by 10 from last November, and worth about $9 million less overall.

Year-to-date, there have been 841 permits issued, for a total value of just under $108 million. Although the number of projects is down a bit from last year's first 11 months, when there were 876 pernits issued, the average value of each project is also well down. The total value of construction to the end of November last year was nearly $125.5 million.

Although residential construction slowed this November as well, the number of dwelling units going up in Brandon is climbing overall.

Last year in November, there were 51 permits issued for a total value of $9.7 million, which led to 22 dwelling units.

This November, there were 48 permits issued for a total value of $4.4 million, and 19 dwelling units.

Year-to-date, homebuilding in the city is ahead of the 2012 pace.

So far in 2013, there have been 394 dwelling units started, at a total value of $74 million. That's well ahead of last year's year-to-date, when there had been 345 dwelling units started, at a total value of $64.6 million.

In the surrounding RMs of Cornwallis and Elton, total construction starts this year are, overall, down about $750,000 until the end of November.
