Finally, consumers have their day.

Today marks the first Consumer Rights Day in Manitoba, the goal to focus on how consumers exercise their right to a sustainable environment.

"This is an opportunity to begin the discussion about consumer rights and responsibilities in this province, to celebrate the protections that we have in Manitoba, and to raise awareness about emerging consumer issues," says Gloria Desorcy, spokesperson for the Manitoba branch of the Consumers' Association of Canada (CAC Manitoba).

The provincial government passed legislation last year designating March 15 as Consumer Rights Day, and making Manitoba one of the first provinces in Canada to recognize the day.

March 15 has long been recognized as World Consumer Rights Day by consumer organizations world-wide. The eight consumer rights include consumers' right to pre-purchase information about products and services, to a fair resolution of a consumer problem, to access goods and services that meet basic needs, and to options that support a healthy and sustainable environment.

This year, the organization plans to celebrate the first-ever Manitoba event by focusing on how consumers exercise their right to a sustainable environment. Guest speaker Byron Williams, Director of the Public Interest Law Centre of Legal Aid Manitoba, will discuss Consumers and the Environment.

"Sustainability is a principle that we all cherish," says Williams. "Depending on the perspective, consumers may help or hinder the environment based on the choices they make. Understanding what drives consumer choice is an essential tool for empowering consumers to support a sustainable and healthy environment."

Williams will be speaking at noon Friday at 303 Portage Avenue on the third floor of the offices of Manitoba Eco-Network.
