Happy solstice: Cool today, improving ahead of weekend
The forecast is still a little iffy for today and tomorrow, but the weekend is beginning to shape up nicely.
According to Environment Canada, if Brandon residents can just put up with one or two more cool days, and the odd sprinkle of rain, they'll be rewarded with a glorious first weekend of summer.
Solstice facts
Summer solstice is the day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, making it the longest day of the year. It's also the official first day of summer.
- Sunrise: 5:31 a.m.
- Sunset: 9:52 p.m.
- Total daylight: 16h 21m

For today, Brandon won't get much of a view of the summer solstice. Although the sun will reach its highest point in the sky today, and today will be the longest day of the year, Brandon will be stuck under dreary, cloudy skies, with a few showers beginning this morning.
And despite the long hours with which the sun has to work, today's high is expected to reach just 16 C.
Skies will begin to clear tonight, although there's still a 70 per cent chance of showers early this evening, and temperatures will fall to a low of 10 C.
Tomorrow will be mainly cloudy as well, with a 70 per cent chance of showers late in the morning and in the afternoon, plus a risk of a thunderstrom late in the afternoon, but temperatures are expected to reach the 20 C mark for the first time since late last week.
For Friday, though, patience begins to pay off. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are all expected to be bright, clear days, with full-on sun and afternoon highs of around 24 C.
The normal high for this time of year is 23 C, the normal low is 11 C.
