Cop clipped by semi truck on Highway 1

An off-duty RCMP member was struck by a semi truck after he stopped at a scene of a rollover last night.

According to RCMP spokesperson Tara Seel, the Winnipeg-based constable was travelling from Saskatchewan back to Winnipeg on Highway 1 when he pulled over to the side of the highway east of Broadview, Sask. around 6 p.m.

Seel said the semi clipped the officer likely as he was getting out of his unmarked cruiser. The driver of the semi didn’t stop.

Because the police officer was thrown to the side of the highway and road conditions were poor, he was not able to make note of the licence plate number or any description, however news reports out of Saskatchewan suggest RCMP made an arrest early Saturday morning.

"It happened so quickly, and of course his focus was on helping the individuals on the side of the road already," Seel said.

Seel said the cop was taken to a nearby health centre in Broadview with minor injuries and was released later last night. Other than some "bumps and bruises," Seel said the officer is fine.

"He was taken to hospital, he was released last night," Seel said.
