Mounties — including the forensics unit and Blue Hill RCMP members — are investigating a serious sexual assault at the base of a cell phone tower south of Kemnay. More information is expected to be released this afternoon.

An injured woman waved down a passing driver on a rural road near Kemnay at 7 a.m., police say, with "obvious injuries" and signs that she'd been sexually assaulted.

Inuries to the 26-year-old victim were non-life threatening injuries, but she was taken to hospital in Brandon.

Forensic investigators continue to comb the scene, which is just south of Highway 1A near Kemnay, near the base of a cell tower.

Police do not have any suspects and wouldn't say if the attacker is known to the victim.

At this point in the investigation, though, they say they don't believe it was a kidnapping.

The assault happened outside in an open rural space, police say, near the cell tower. Aside from a small metal structure and shipping container in the middle of a field, there are no neighbouring buildings within sight.

RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact the Brandon Detachment at 204-726-7519 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
