Cops seize fake sex pills
RCMP HANDOUT Enlarge Image
Fake Viagra and Levitra pills, used to treat erectile dysfunction, were seized earlier this month by RCMP.
Thousands of counterfeit Viagra and Levitra pills have been seized by RCMP, after customs officers found them stashed inside electric rice cookers being shipped into Canada from China.
The fake pills — RCMP say they found about 2,400 tablets of both Viagra and Levitra, used to treat erectile dysfunction — have a retail value of about $47,000.
But they warn that buyers of the counterfeit medication may have ended up stiffed in a way they hadn't anticipated. Although the pills were in blister packs with batch numbers and expiry dates just like authentic pills, they contained wildly varying amounts of the active ingredient.
Police said patients could have ingested anywhere from zero to three or four times the expected amount of actual drug.
"This is the largest seizure of this type of product that we have made to date" said Cpl. John Montgomery of the RCMP Federal Enforcement Section, "and one of the higher quality counterfeit versions we have seen."
He added that fakes like these often have fillers like talcum powder, crushed wall board, other drugs or any other number of non-medicinal ingredients and are often colored with blue paint.
The pills were seized on March 12, but information about it was released this afternoon. No arrests have been made, but RCMP say they continue to investigate.

If it was "fake sex" that was coming in pill format, the headline would be written as "Cops seize fake-sex pills" — note the hyphen, which would be required to compoundify the modifier ;)
