Cougars off to Telus Cup regional final

Cameron Rowat scored from the side of the net on a five-on-three power play with three minutes left in regulation time to lift the Southwest Cougars to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Wild Saturday afternoon in Virden and advance to the Telus Cup Western Regional Championship game.

Lucas Oliver took the puck around the net before feeding it across the crease to Rowat, who stopped the puck and promptly lifted it past Wild goalie Alex Moodie.

The Cougars’ celebration didn’t last long as the they took two penalties in the final two minutes, giving the Wild (1-1-1) a six-on-three advantage for the final 1:35 as they pulled their goalie. Cougars netminder Brian Archibald, who made 25 saves in the game, wouldn’t let the lead disappear as the Cougars (2-1-0) hung on for the win.

David Heath and Jordan Greig scored in the second period for the Cougars. Kevin Pochuk and Sean Higgins replied for the Wild, who swept the Cougars in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League championship series. Every goal in the game except for Heath’s was scored on the power play.

The Cougars will now play the Saskatoon Contacts (2-0-1), who beat the Kenora Thistles 4-0 on Sunday, in the final.

Head coach Troy Leslie was ecstatic with the win, but knows the event isn’t over yet.

"It feels good, but we know we’re playing a real good team tomorrow," he said. "It’s nice to be able to get into the final in front in your home communities and hopefully they fill the barn for us tomorrow."

The puck drops at 2 p.m. at the Virden MultiPlex.
