Council votes to withdraw Bill 7

City council will ask the Government of Manitoba to withdraw a controversial bill, which would give municipalities the power to require developers to include affordable housing in new residential developments.

After several delegations in opposition to Bill 7 and a lengthy debate Monday night -- that ran past The Sun's print deadline -- city council ultimately voted in favour of the motion brought forward by Coun. Jim McCrae to request the province withdraw Bill 7, and renew consultations with Manitoba and Brandon developers.

Council voted 8-3 in favour of McCrae's motion. Councillors Garth Rice (South Centre) and Jan Chaboyer (Green Acres), along with Mayor Shari Decter Hirst were opposed.

The bill recently received first reading in the legislature. Municipalities would be able to take a mandatory, incentive-based or hybrid approach to requiring affordable housing, through inclusionary zoning.

What does Brandon Countlors have to do with out side of Brandon. We don't have enough Low Rentals places because of Maple Leaf. They were supposed to have their own living accomadations for the MEX but instead, they are living in all the LOW RENTAL. The LOW class people who are from Manitoba, were born here should have them. Some of the OLDER people living on a fixed income can't afford to pay these hight PRICES> I was going to pay $500/month for just a room but decided to move to a small town where people are more respected. Brandon is a ????? hole. I rather live in a box then pay these high PRICES. Hope other read this and take it to the city Councill.. White Knight
