Driver critically injured after crashing into fire truck on Trans-Canada Highway

A 29-year-old Steinbach man is in critical condition after the semi-trailer truck he was driving this afternoon hit a fire truck stopped on the shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg, then rammed into a semi that had also stopped on the side of the road. The driver of the semi that was hit, a 65-year-old Ontario man, was not injured.
The accident happened after the St. Francois Xavier fire department and RCMP at Headingley were called out at 1:30 p.m. to assist the driver of a semi who had pulled over on Highway 1 near the junction of Highway 26 because his truck was leaking diesel fuel. RCMP and fire officials closed one of the eastbound lanes to allow for the cleanup, RCMP said.
About 45 minutes later, an eastbound semi pulling an empty livestock trailer driven by the Steinbach man collided with a fire truck at the scene, lost control and hit the back end of the parked semi. The collision threw two firefighters and an RCMP officer to the ground, police said. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
An off-duty paramedic stopped at the scene and provided care to the driver of the semi that caused the collision, police said. He was airlifted to hospital and last reported in critical but stable condition.
An RCMP traffic reconstructionist is on scene assisting with the investigation, police said.
Traffic slowed to a crawl past the wreckage with two of the four lanes closed on the Trans-Canada Highway.

A continuation of the inordinate road carnage caused by truck drivers who apparently have concentration issues, even in broad daylight.

Maybe it's time for a study. Oh no, not another study!
