Brandon mayor Shari Decter Hirst said she would ask council to make pool funding a priority.

Brandon mayor Shari Decter Hirst says that she will push for increased pool and recreational funding if she is re-elected this fall.

Decter Hirst announced the policy planks — some of the first specific promises of any campaign — at Rideau Park in Brandon's east end, where a popular new spray park sits right next to the aging Kinsmen swimming pool.

"The Kinsmen Pool needs a champion," she said in a handout statement. "Recreation isn't a luxury in a community of 52,000 people, with so many young families calling Brandon home."

In a promise that echoed her 2010 pledge to keep the Sportsplex pool open, Decter Hirst said that she will advocate for funding a recreational facilities master plan, plus specific funding for the Kinsmen and Keystone swimming pools.

She also said that she would ask the city's parks department for plans to upgrade the Kinsmen Pool in 2016, to include things like zero-depth entry, a lazy river and waterslides.

Typical, absolutely no talk of reducing spending, I guess why would I expect that now after 4 years of out of control spending and raises!

Shari, you have a lot of ideas to spend our tax dollars but what about bringing cash into the coffers to ease taxpayer's burden? I hope that you don't think that saving the Sportsplex pool was a win for you, how many millions did that election promise cost the citizens of this city?
