Did thief make waterborne escape?

The trail went cold at the river's edge, with a missing watercraft, as police tried to track down an early-morning thief.

At least two quads, a trailer and a dirt bike were stolen along with the watercraft, although everything designed for land-based travel was later recovered.

Police were called at about 4:30 a.m. by a resident of the area, who said that about 45 minutes earlier he had seen a four-wheeled ATV, pulling a watercraft on a trailer east across First Street North, near the Manitoba Highways garage.

Officers checking out the call uncovered a break-in to a business compound in the 1400-block of First Street North, where a different ATV had been stolen. That ATV was found in an open area north of Glenn Avenue.

Police also found a 185 cc dirt bike near the Highway's garage. It, along with the suspicious ATV, trailer and watercraft, turned out to have been stolen from a different business, in the 1600-block of First Street North, where the compound's gate had been forced open.

The suspicious ATV and trailer were later found along the north side of the Assiniboine River, but the watercraft was long gone.

Police say they continue to investigate.
