Driver fined for fatal crash

A man who fell asleep at the wheel, ran a stop sign and killed a man and woman who were riding a motorcycle has been fined a total of $8,000 and banned from driving for two years.

Shawn Bradley Draveski was sentenced Tuesday afternoon after previously pleading guilty to two counts of careless driving causing death under the Highway Traffic Act.

Jared Youzwa, 26, and Ngan Nguyen, 25, were killed in a collision on the afternoon of July 12, 2013. The couple was on their way to attend a wedding in Dysart, Sask. at the time.

Dreveski was driving a van south on Highway 270 when he fell asleep and failed to halt at a stop sign at the intersection with the Trans-Canada Highway.

Youzwa, who was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle west along the Trans-Canada Highway, with Nguyen riding as a passenger behind him, couldn’t avoid the van and hit it near the driver’s door.

Youzwa died instantly and Nguyen passed away later that night.
