A driver of a stolen truck with stolen plates blasted through red lights leading city cops in a car chase that ended just west of the city early Sunday morning.
The chase lasted just three to four minutes, according to the Brandon Police Service.
A 49-year old Brandon man was arrested just after 2:30 a.m. after police saw the vehicle, described as a Dodge pickup with Manitoba license plate ERW 161, fail to stop at a red light on 18th Street and Victoria Avenue.
After police turned on sirens, the suspect continued driving west on Victoria Avenue, cruising through more red lights leading cops to a local driving range on Highway 1A, where the suspect vehicle drove into a field.
That’s when the car chase ended, but the suspect still tried to get away.
The man then ran a short distance with cops in tow before a service dog nabbed the suspect.
Police say the pickup was stolen from a rural location south of the city and the licence plates were stolen from another vehicle in Brandon’s north end.
A passenger in the vehicle, a 14-year-old Winnipeg boy, was arrested and jailed on Sunday as well.
Police say the boy, a runaway, was found with a hunting knife. Police also found break-in tools in the truck.
The 49-year old driver will appear in court on June 30 to be charged with theft of motor vehicle, theft under $5000, possession of break-in instruments, dangerous driving, drive while prohibited, and flight from police.
The 14-year old has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and six counts of breaching court orders.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police say they have nabbed a suspect in relation to van stolen from the Redwood Inn on 18th Street. Cops say the the 2004 brown Ford Freestar van, with licence plate number GWD 932 was taken at around 11 p.m.
Police say they continue to investigate.
