A drunk driver behind the wheel of a stolen pickup steered straight at police before veering away at the last second to smash into a parked vehicle in a nearby driveway. That's the close call police say they had just past 4 a.m. Tuesday morning on Parkdale Drive.
They were called to the area by a resident who said that the pickup was racing past his home a couple of times with a front tire missing; the truck was travelling on the bare rim.
When officers arrived, they say the truck took aim straight at them, charging head-on towards the police cruiser before swerving away at the last moment. It plowed into a residential driveway nearby, where it crashed into the vehicle that was parked there.
An 18-year-old man was arrested still behind the wheel of the truck.
Police say he showed signs of intoxication and was arrested for impaired driving. He later gave breath samples that showed a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
Later investigation showed that the truck had been stolen from Buttercup Bay earlier in the morning; the key had apparently been left inside.
Police say the man they arrested also had no driver’s license and is also on probation — which he was in breach of. He was taken to the Brandon Correctional Centre, and is to appear in court to face charges including vehicle theft and impaired driving on Aug. 18.
