Brandon police checked more than 3,000 drivers at a series of Checkstops over the holidays.

Police say that zero drunk drivers were uncovered through a month of stepped-up Checkstops around the holiday season. But that doesn't mean there weren't any out there — officers on patrol nabbed 11 impaired drivers during the same period.

The "Festive Spirits" enforcement campaign ran from Dec. 5 through Jan. 1 and saw Brandon police officers conducting a number of high-profile Checkstops. In total, they screened 3,265 vehicles.

The vast bulk of those drivers were obeying all the rules. Police say they issued 45 tickets under the Highway Traffic Act through the Checkstops this year, including 12 for unregistered vehicles, 11 for driver license violations, five for distracted driving and 17 various other tickets. They also issued one citation for having open liquor.

Last year, during the same program, Brandon police checked 3,169 vehicles and also found no drunk drivers. However, they've been getting a little stricter with the rest of the ticket book — last year, they handed out just 27 tickets, and only 15 were issued two years ago.
