Eighth Street bridge unable to hold vehicle traffic

The Eighth Street bridge has reopened to pedestrians but will remain closed to vehicular traffic.

The City of Brandon reports that a structural engineer from Dillon Consultants in Winnipeg has identified that the damage sustained to the bridge's lateral supports, when a private garbage truck struck the underside of the bridge on Jan. 14, has affected the bridge's ability to support the weight of vehicles.

City staff are currently working with the engineering firm on a preliminary design to repair the damage. According to a city press release, that design work should be completed later this week, with more information on a repair timeline to follow.

Affected Brandon Transit riders can call the Brandon Transit Information Office at (204) 729-2477 for more information.
