'Exploding bottles' scare fizzles out: Police

Brandon parents worried that their kids are in danger from exploding pop bottles are the victims of an unwitting hoax, police say.

An email being circulated in Brandon has gotten out of control, they say.

The warning purportedly says that a simple concoction can be mixed in discarded pop bottles that are then left lying about. When a do-gooder attempts to pick up and recycle the bottle, the agitation causes pressure to build up, and the bottle is said to explode.

Police say they can't verify the information in the email, but admit that it originated from a Brandon Police Service member. It's believed that the caution started as a police officer's personal discussion about the types of information available on the internet, and when it was forwarded on, others interpreted it as a warning from the police force itself.

According to Brandon police, there have been no problems of this type reported in the area.
