The federal government will give half a million dollars to the the renovation of the historic Dome Building on the grounds of the Keystone Centre.

The long-vacant building, formally known as the Dominion Exhibition Display Building No. II, recently unveiled fully restored windows.

"We’re so excited and grateful to receive the approval for this funding from Canadian Heritage which will allow us to move ahead with the completion of the exterior of Display Building No. II and restore this community landmark to its former glory," said Karen Oliver, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba.

The federal money was announced in a press release from Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Merv Tweed today.

"By supporting the Dome Building restoration, our government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support our arts, culture, and heritage," Tweed said. "The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba has worked tirelessly on this project through fundraising and overwhelming volunteer support. I commend them for putting together an excellent plan and team."

I'm sure the residents of Brandon are ecstatic about the government hand-out; same as when Rivers was trying to establish funding for their rec centre. I find this typical of the "nanny" mentality that I found so prevalent when I lived in Brandon: when a project is contemplated, the first priority is- what kind of government assistance can we get? Too many years of NDP rule has affected people's outlook. The attitude of independent thinking and self-preservation needs to be renewed,Manitobans are too used to the government telling them how to think. Even possessing a radar-detector is a punishable offence!
Here's hoping Manitobans will return to the type of spirit this great province was built on! Good luck with your building project!

Get the money as quick as possible before something happens with the present government in Ottawa, funnier things have happened before. At the rate they are going, there maybe a few members sitting as independents before long.

Can the team that put together the Dome proposal be slated to work on The Strand proposal now? The Dome Building team sems to know what they are doing!
