Earlier this year, the committee in charge of fundraising for the monument said that they had reached about $43,000 of their goal, which is reportedly $90,000-100,000 or more, depending on construction costs.

Then today, the federal government cut a cheque for $50,000.

"It is great that federal funds are available to honour our veterans," said Don Berry, chair of the Brandon Veterans Memorial Committee. "This donation will go a long way in helping us achieve our goal."

The new monument will be located just off Victoria Avenue near the Armoury.  It will be a three piece granite structure framed by three illuminated flagpoles.

Merv Tweed, MP for Brandon-Souris announced the funding today, on behalf of Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney.

"The new memorial will help to preserve the memory of our heroes who have served Canada in times of war and peace," Tweed said. "Our government is committed to partnering with communities across Canada to build cenotaphs and monuments to commemorate the achievements and sacrifices of those who have served Canada and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the freedoms we enjoy today."
