First line stars for Wheaties
Brandon’s top line stepped into the spotlight as the Wheat Kings beat the Regina Pats 7-4 Saturday in the Queen City to start the Western Hockey League season with their second straight win.
Centre Tyrel Seaman led the way with two goals and an assist, while wingers Alessio Bertaggia and Jason Swyripa each added a goal and two helpers.
"I think they did a good job, starting (Friday) night and they continued on today," Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said. "We wanted the older guys to lead and that’s what those guys are going to have to do."
Nick Buonassisi, Daniel Asham and Tim McGauley, with an empty-netter, also scored for Brandon, which swept the home-and-home series. Defenceman Ryan Pulock added three assists.
Trent Ouellette, Cole Hamblin, Adam Brooks and Dyson Stevenson scored for the Pats, who took three one-goal leads before the Wheat Kings broke out by scoring three times in the second half of the second period.
Gylywoychuk was pleased with his team’s resilience.
"You never know what’s going to happen in the game of hockey," said Gylywoychuk, who also credited the Wheat Kings for recovering quickly after allowing an early third-period Regina marker that cut Brandon’s lead to a single goal. "You’ve got to fight through adversity and whatever happens, you’ve got to deal with it and move on. I think we did that in the third period. They scored early and then we battled back."
Brandon goalie Corbin Boes made 19 saves, while Matt Hewitt stopped 17 of 22 shots in the first two periods for Regina, before being replaced by Teagan Sacher, who stopped 10 of 11 the rest of the way.
ONE-TIMERS: Brandon went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Regina was 2-for-6 … McGauley's goal was his first point in the WHL, while LW Geordie Maguire had two assists for his first career points … Brandon LW Kord Pankewicz and C John Quenneville made their WHL debuts … Brandon scratched C Jayce Hawryluk (concussion), LW Taylor Cooper, RW Quintin Lisoway, C Ryley Lindgren, D Colton Waltz and D Riley Van Horne … The status of Saskatoon RW Josh Nicholls for the Blades’ game in Brandon on Wednsday is in doubt after he was suspended indefinitely by the WHL for taking a charging major in Friday’s game against Prince Albert. Nicholls sat out Saturday’s rematch with the Raiders … Moose Jaw D Joel Edmundson of Brandon is also awaiting a ruling on the length of his suspension after a dust-up with Swift Current LW Adam Lowry on Friday. Edmundson was given a fighting major and tossed from the game, while Lowry was assessed only a roughing minor.
