A man apparently trying to duck the cops after an assault was later picked up drunk behind the wheel.

Police say they got a 911 call about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday evening from a female who said she had been assaulted at a Brandon home. She needed hospital treatment after being hit a number of times in the head and face, but has since been released.

Invesitgators say the suspect in the domestic assault had left the home before police arrived, but they spotted him behind the wheel of a vehicle in the 1200-block of 10th Street. When they pulled him over, he appeared drunk, and he was arrested. He later provided breath samples that showed a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.

A 40-year-old Brandon man faces charges of assault causing bodily harm, impaired driving and drive over .08. He was released from custody to appear in court at a later date.
