Double crackdown on drugs in Virden

Police say they've taken about $22,000 worth of drugs off of Virden streets following a pair of drug busts in the past month.

First, on March 30, police executed a search warrant on a Virden home where they found nearly a pound of marijuana, along with a small quantity of psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and hashish oil. Those drugs had an estimated street value of about $5,000.

A 25-year-old Virden man was arrested and has been charged with two counts of trafficking a controlled substance, one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a weapon/ammunition while prohibited.

A 19-year-old Virden woman was also arrested, and has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Both have been released from custody, and are to appear in Virden Provincial Court at a later date.

More recently, police also seized an additional $17,000 in drugs -- three different kinds -- and arrested four people, after executing a search warrant at another home in Virden.

RCMP officers searched the home at about 1 p.m. on April 19, where they found about 1,400 tablets of ecstasy, about an ounce of cocaine and about two-and-a-half grams of crystal meth. Together, the drugs have an estimated street value of $17,000, police say.

A 34-year-old Virden man has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of trafficking a controlled substance and one count of possessing the proceeds of crime.

An 18-year-old Virden man has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Two other men were also arrested and are facing charges of possession of a controlled substance.

All of the accused have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Virden Provincial Court at a later date.

Information about both search warrants was released today.
