Four properties up for potential tax sale

Four properties could be on the auction block in the City of Brandon’s tax sale, Thursday (Oct. 18) in the Brandon City Hall council chambers at 9:30 a.m.

The properties came up for tax sale because portions of the 2010 property tax bill remain unpaid, said Shelley Tataryn, the city’s accounting manager.

Property owners have until 9:29 a.m. to pay off the outstanding 2010 tax bill by cash, money order, debit, or certified cheque guaranteed by a financial institution to keep ownership of their properties. If the auction starts with the taxes still owing on the property, the property is put up for sale with a reserve bid of the total of 2010 and 2011 taxes that remain unpaid.

"If we offer something up for sale, we want to be able to cover our taxes for both years, plus any costs," Tataryn said.

If no one bids on the property, the City of Brandon becomes the owner of the property. Depending on how much the property is sold for, the total bid may be payable by Thursday at 4 p.m.

In the case of properties sold for more than $10,000, a $9,500 non-refundable deposit is required by 4 p.m. The balance would be due by Nov. 7.

Those sold for less than $10,000 will require an immediate $500 deposit, with the balance due by Thursday at 4 p.m.
