Got anything you want given away? This weekend is the time to do it.
Brandon is organizing a free curbside giveway weekend this Saturday and Sunday — an opportunity to consider your trash as someone else's treasure.
The event encourages the swapping of quality used items as a way to keep them out of the landfill and will be held across Brandon on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.
To participate, simply set unwanted items out at the curb at the beginning of the weekend. People may wish to keep give-away items separated in a specific area on the curb and specifically mark them with a "Free" sticker or sign. Residents are also encouraged to tuck away personal belongings such as yard ornaments, bicycles or children’s toys that may ordinarily sit in front yards to ensure people don’t mistake them as give-away items.
Those in search of "new to them" items can tour the city looking for give-away pieces, but should ensure that they respect others' property by not walking across lawns and only taking items that are clearly meant as giveaways.
Once the weekend is through, leftover items must be removed, or homeowners risk being ticketed under the city's garbage bylaw. Items not picked up by late Sunday afternoon should be removed from the curb by 5 p.m.
Residents are asked to use discretion when placing out or picking up used furniture, mattresses or bedding. Also, Health Canada advises that used children's items such as baby walkers, yo-yo balls, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, toys and other child-related items should not be placed at the curb during a giveaway weekend.
