Head-on crash sends three to hospital

Icy road conditions were a factor in a head-on highway collision that sent three people to hospital.

On Wednesday at 11 a.m., Shoal Lake RCMP and emergency personnel were called to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 16, just west of the community of Shoal Lake, police said in a release Friday.

A westbound 2005 Honda Civic had moved into the oncoming lane to check if it was safe to pass a semi truck and trailer.

When it attempted to move back into its lane, the 19-year-old Winnipeg driver lost control of the vehicle on a patch of ice and skidded into the on coming vehicle, police said.

The 45-year-old driver from Russell of the eastbound 2005 Montana attempted to avoid the Honda Civic.

The Montana struck the Honda Civic on the passenger front side of the vehicle.

The Montana ended up rolled in the ditch which required the driver to be extricated from the vehicle.

All three occupants were taken to hospital with varying non-life threatening injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate.
