High temps for start of long weekend

Soldiers from the Second Battalion PPCLI performed a 15km run, followed by a 1.5 km canoe portage, a 4km paddle and another 3km run, while wearing 35-pound backpacks as training for Mountain Man, a gruelling 50km challenge held this August in Alberta. 13 soldiers took part in the training on Thursday, as temperatures reached 26 C. It'll be even warmer today.

It's a great day to lead in to the Canada Day long weekend, but the weekend itself will be hit-and-miss

Environment Canada is predicted a high of 27 C, under purely blue and sunny skies this afternoon, although the winds will stick around, becoming 20 km/h from the northwest early this afternoon.

Tonight, skies will stay clear, and temperatures should fall to about 13 C, although some clouds will roll in before morning.

It'll be warm on Saturday, too, with a high of 28 C, although there's a 30 per cent chance of showers late in the morning and in the afternoon, with the risk of a thunderstorm.

Skies should, again, clear in the evening, and Sunday will be clear and sunny, with an afternoon high of 29 C -- perfect for the festivities.

On holiday Monday, however, more clouds and a 60 per cent chance of showers are expected, although with a high of 28 C.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday look like scorchers -- not a cloud in sight, and highs of 27 C, 30 C, and 31 C, respectively, with overnight lows in the mid teens.

The normal high for this time of year is 25 C, the normal low is 12 C.
