Highway visibility poor, expected to get worse before it gets better

Visiblility on Westman highways is down to less than a kilometre in many areas, with blowing, swirling snow impeding travel.

Many highways are partly snow covered, and there have been reports of several vehicles in the ditches.

The RCMP warns that response time to emergencies may be delayed due to highway conditions in some areas.

Environment Canada says that an Alberta clipper that is tracking through North Dakota today, pushing storm systems up into southern Manitoba. The heaviest snow is expected in a band from Dauphin through Selkirk, and then through the Whiteshell. Strong winds are expected to taper off this afternoon in Brandon and much of Westman.

For travellers, the southern part of the Red River Valley is expected to be the worst-hit area, with blizzard-like conditions much of today.

Arctic air that follows the storm will push temperatures down, and extreme windchill values of -40 to -45 are predited this evening. At that rate of chill, frostbite on exposed skin can occur in less than 10 minutes.

The unseasonably cold temperatures will persist for the remainder of the year.
