Historic homestead damaged

Police are investigating vandalism at the historic Criddle/Vane homestead site southeast of Brandon.

The homestead, a provincial historic site, suffered broken windows and a protective panel was also destroyed in the vandalism, but police aren't sure when it happened.

The site is about 40 km southeast of Brandon in the RM of South Cypress, and became Manitoba’s 79th provincial park in 2004.

The Criddle and Vane families were Prairie pioneers who became well known for their contributions to science — especially entomology, the study of insects — art, sports and culture. It's not the first time that the site has been the victim of vandals.

In 2012, five rural Brandon youths were nabbed by police after substantial damage was done to the property.

Anyone with tips about the most recent spate of mischief is asked to call the Brandon RCMP at 204-726-7522, or Crime Stoppers.
