It’s so hot, we’re livestreaming this 4 kg ice block as it melts in the sun

Broadcast live streaming video on Ustream

The livestream has now ended.

With temperatures forecast to hit 30ºC in Brandon for the first time this year — and with Humidex readings higher than 40 in some parts of Westman, we're going to see just what those numbers mean.

The Brandon Sun has put a four kilogram block of ice to sit in the hot sun. We're going to see how long it takes to melt.

The livestreaming originally started at about 3:30 p.m., in a hot car, but things got so hot so fast that the iPhone we were using for livesteaming overheated. (Our digital thermometer quickly soared higher than 49ºC — parents and pet owners, take note.)

We popped the ice block in a cooler and moved it to a private yard, starting the streaming again aournd 5 p.m. Temperatures then were officially given by Environment Canada at 30.2ºC but our digital thermometer marked it as 34.6ºC.

The mercury was expected to keep climbing until at least 7 p.m.

With failing light from a battery-operated LED trouble lamp, livestreaming ended at 12:20 a.m. Temperatures were in the low 20s at the time and there was still a large chunk of ice left.

The ice was gone in the morning.

I guess this is what happens when a News paper gets rid of it's Editor!

Actually, we are! The ice is sitting on a foil disposable baking pan with a few holes poked in it; they drain into the bucket below.

It would melt faster if you drained the water from the ice
