STONEWALL -- The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is only two draws old and already there has been a major upset.

Eleventh-seed Colleen Kilgallen of Pinawa stunned five-time Canadian champion Cathy Overton-Clapham 7-3 here Wednesday afternoon in what was the first game of the Manitoba women’s curling championship for both teams.
"It feels great to beat such an outstanding team," Kilgallen said afterward. "It’s a really big accomplishment for us."
It’s also a considerable setback for Overton-Clapham in a seven-game round-robin in which past history has shown that sometimes one loss is all a team can afford to still make the weekend playoff round.
"We really got outplayed," said Overton-Clapham, who was heavy on a draw to the 12-foot in the fifth end that cost her team a steal and put them down 5-2 heading into the break.
Overton-Clapham was hoping the opening of the provincials would provide her team a fresh start after a bad cashspiel season, but it looked like just more of the same in her opener with Kilgallen.
She remains the eternal optimist, however.
"I’m enjoying the ice and still feel like I’m putting the broom down in the right spot, but we just got down early," said Overton-Clapham.
In other games on the 12:15 p.m. draw, second seed Chelsea Carey defeated Brandon’s Stacey Fordyce 6-2; in a battle of former provincial women’s champions, Darcy Robertson throttled Karen Fallis 8-1 in just six ends; and 2010 Manitoba women’s champion Jill Thurston overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat Dauphin’s Lisa Menard 9-6.
Earlier Wednesday, Jennifer Jones -- the defending Manitoba women’s champion -- defeated Brandon’s Liza Park 9-3, while fourth seed Barb Spencer beat La Salle’s Deb McCreanor 10-4.
In other games on the opening draw, Kate Cameron gave the locals something to cheer about as her Stonewall foursome upset fifth seed Janet Harvey 8-4 and Assiniboine-Memorial’s Michelle Montford drummed Burntwood’s Charlene Norquay 12-2.
The Scotties tournament continues on the 4 p.m. draw with Jones taking on McCreanor, Montford playing Cameron, Norquay playing Harvey and Spencer playing Park.
