Initial reports of a disturbance turned police on to a large marijuana grow-op yesterday afternoon.

Police say they were initially called to the disturbance at a home in the 300-block of Second Street a little after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. However, once police got inside, they say they could smell the strong odour of marijuana and could see marijuana plants in plain view.

After getting a search warrant, police went through the house top to bottom — and say they found pot plants growing both upstairs on the third floor, and downstairs in the basement.

Both grows were complete with lighting, timers, planting soil, fertilizer and irrigation systems.

In total, about 300 marijuana plants in various stages of growth were seized, as well as about a pound of dried marijuana. The occupants of the home — two men aged 54 and 60 as well as a 49-year-old woman — were arrested and have been charged with producing marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana.

After police finished their search, the three people were released with conditions and are to appear in court in April.

Police estimate that 300 marijuana plants grown indoors are potentially capable of producing potwith a street value of approximately $150,000 per harvest, if sold by the ounce.

The pound of marijuana seized has a street value of approximately $6,800, they say, if sold by the gram.
