Long weekend checkstops find few problems

Nearly 1,500 vehicles were screened during eight checkstops last week in Brandon, but police only needed to hand out 110 tickets.
The week-long checkstop blitz, held May 14–21 to include the Victoria Day long weekend, was part of Canada Road Safety Week.
Brandon police said today they arrested just two people for impaired driving as a result of the stepped-up enforcement. The 110 tickets they issued included 26 for speeding, seven people who were not belted in, 11 for not having a proper driver's licence, 14 for an unregistered vehicle, 11 for people on their cellphones and one for a Liquor Control Act offence.
