Police in Dauphin have a man in custody — despite a disturbance after his arrest that led them to take a second man with them.
Officers with the Dauphin municipal RCMP were dispatched to a Main Street hotel in that city shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, where it was reported that a man had forced his way into one of the rooms and, once inside, had assaulted the female occupant.
When police arrived, they arrested the man, but he didn't go without a fight, allegedly assaulting one of the arresting officers while he was being taken to the police car.
Then, a second man, who was in a group of nearby people, started swearing at police and causing a disturbance, so he was arrested too.
Frank Wilfred Chartrand, 26, has been charged with break and enter with intent, uttering threats and assaulting a peace officer.
Russell Daniel Genaille, 24, has been charged with causing a disturbance, uttering threats and obstructing a peace officer.
Both men are residents of Dauphin and both appeared in court Wednesday morning.
Chartrand was remanded in custody to May 5, while Genaille was released on a recognizance with his next court date being May 20.
Neither the female victim inside the hotel room, nor the police officer were seriously injured.
