Man dies trapped in shed surrounded by grass fire

A 78-year-old man died Thursday afternoon after becoming trapped in a shed surrounded by a grass fire southeast of Portage la Prairie.

RCMP said firefighters went to the farm property to extinguish the fire and the man was discovered inside the shed after the fire was out.

"Witnesses said he was trying to put out the grass fire after it spread to the shed," RCMP Cpl. Mile Hiebert said, adding no one was aware that the man had gone into the shed.

It’s not known why the man went inside the shed, Hiebert said, adding additional witnesses are being sought.

Hiebert said the incident is under investigation and an autopsy will be performed.

"It’s a tragedy," Hiebert said. "People underestimate the speed that a grass fire can spread to engulf out-properties and buildings."
