Man driving stolen vehicle was drunk

Police in Dauphin and Winnipegosis chased a vehicle early Saturday morning that turned out to have been stolen, they say.

It was officers with the Dauphin RCMP who first tried to pull the vehicle over, shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday morning on River Avenue East in Dauphin.

Instead, the vehicle headed north on Highway 20, and the Dauphin officers called in help from the Winnipegosis RCMP in chasing it down.

Eventually, the vehicle turned into a private yard and stopped, where the man behind the wheel was arrested without incident.

Police say he was drink, and later provided breath sample that showed a blood-alcohol level over .08.

After his arrest, they discovered that the vehicle had been stolen from a Dauphin home in the previous day.

Georgie Donovan Lamirande, 19, of Dauphin, has been charged with a number of criminal offences including flight from police, impaired driving and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was held in custody for the rest of the weekend, and was to appear in Dauphin court on Monday.
