Man killed after flipping van into water-filled ditch

A 36-year-old man is dead after a rollover east of Russell just past midnight Tuesday night.

Prairie Mountain RCMP were called to the crash at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. They found a minivan on its roof in several feet of water, in the north ditch of Highway 45, about 16 km east of Russell.

They say it looks like the van was headed east on the highway when it left the road and hit an approach, flipping it on its roof.

The driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was found belted inside the upside-down van, and needed to be extracted before he could be taken to Russell hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say they haven't ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash, but it wasn't related to any of the nearby flooding. They've ordered an autopsy, and won't be releasing the dead man's name, although they said he was from Elphinstone.

A caller to the Brandon Sun who identified herself as a cousin of the deceased, however, identified him as Ventura Shingoose, and said he was born and raised in Waywayseecappo. She said her cousin has three children who live in Elphinstone.

The investigation continues with the help of an RCMP forensic traffic reconstructionist.
