Man killed while tubing in Asessippi

An 83-year-old Winnipeg man is dead after apparently drowning while tubing on the Shell River in Asessippi Provincial Park.

The man had been river tubing yesterday, with family members, when they lost sight of him. He was later found unconcious. Resuscitation attempts failed, and although the man was rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Officials at the nearby Asessippi Ski Area and Resort said that high water on the Shell River, caused by recent rains, had forced them to cancel their own river tubing operations this weekend.

Police and emergency workers, who were called around 5:30 p.m., say the man wasn't wearing a life jacket. An official cause of death has yet to be determined, but police an autopsy is expected in the coming days.
