Manitoba Heritage Tattoo cancelled

The Manitoba Heritage Tattoo likely has played its final notes in Brandon.

The 2012 show, scheduled for Oct. 27 at the Keystone Centre, has been cancelled because of a lack of ticket sales, said David Wilson, the executive director for the Augustfest Brandon Inc.

Wilson said the number of tickets sold to date was less than the more than 250 performers who were expected to perform at the event.

In a 2010 Brandon Sun article, Wilson had expressed concerns about whether there would be a third Tattoo in Brandon, after an estimated crowd of 300 people — well below the anticipated 1,000 for that night’s performances — were on hand to view the 475 performers on opening night. The total attendance for the two shows that year was 700.

That year’s show had a budget of about $90,000, including a $14,100 grant from Canadian Heritage and $10,000 in city and local sponsorships, but ultimately organizers lost $10,000.

The first Tattoo, in 2008, attracted 4,000 people, but came after an attempt to host the Tattoo in 2007 was cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

Wilson said ticket refunds can be arranged through the Keystone Centre box office.
