WINNIPEG — Manitoba farmers saw a 14.8 per cent jump in gross income in the first quarter of this year, according to Statistics Canada figures released today.

The agency said Manitoba farmers reported cash receipts of $1.6 billion from the sales of crops and livestock and from government support program. That compared to farm cash receipts of $1.4 billion for the first quarter of 2011, which had been down 0.8 per cent from the same period in 2010.

Manitoba’s increase was the third largest in the country behind Alberta’s 28.3 per cent and Saskatchewan’s 25.4 per cent.

Nationally, StatsCan said every province except Prince Edward Island saw a rise in cash receipts during the quarter.

And Canada’s increase was even bigger than Manitoba’s — up 16.9 per cent to $14.4 billion from $12.3 billion in the first quarter of 2011.

It said Canada’s increase included a 25.2 per cent increase in crop receipts and a 9.1 per cent increase in livestock receipts. Those offset a 1.6 per cent decline in program payments.

Farm cash receipts measure gross revenues. They do not represent farmers’ bottom line, as they still have to deduct expenses for things like fuel, fertilizer, farm loans, and equipment depreciation.
