Brandon Sun - ONLINE EDITION
Mercury rises, heat records may fall
Fikir Jabora laughs as she dashes through a spray of cool water at the Stanley Park spray facility on Monday afternoon. The park, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sept. 6, will offer relief to those seeking to escape the heat this week. Temperatures are forecast to be more than 30 C through the weekend. (COLIN CORNEAU/THE BRANDON SUN)
It's going to be so hot out there today that Brandon may just sweat the 'W' off of its nickname: the Heat City.
Environment Canada predicts a high of 34 C this afternoon, just four-tenths of a degree shy of a 1966 record for this day. And, with all the moisture in the air, the Humidex is set to hit 38.
A very little bit of cloud may help keep the sun off of you, briefly, this afternoon, and very light breeze of will at least move the air around, but they'll be blowing in from the south.
Don't expect much relief tonight, either. Temperatures will mostly stay in the 20s overnight, just dipping down to a low of 19 C before dawn tomorrow.
And about that tomorrow — the forecast calls for another high of 34 C, which would be well above the record high for that day (32.8 C), set in 1957.
Clouds will roll in Wednesday night, and a chance of showers on Thursday will cool things off slightly — but that's a relative term, with the forecast for Thursday calling for a high of "just" 30 C and a low of 16 C.
Friday will be sunny again, with a forecast high of 33 C and a low of 17 C.
Thirty-plus temperatures are predicted through the weekend as well, although there is a small chance of showers for Saturday.
The normal high for this time of year is 25 C, the normal low is 13 C.
