Richmond Ward councillor Stephen Montague says he will decline to contest the seat in this fall's election.
Montague, a one-term councillor who knocked out 21-year incumbent Margo Campbell in his second attempt, in 2010, had been mulling his options for over a week, and had promised a Friday noon decision.
Shortly after 2 p.m., Montague tweeted out from his @richmondward account that he would "not be seeking re-election as Councillor." He also thanked residents for their support over his term.
During his time on council, Montague pushed successfuly to expand the city's ban on bottled water, and for the creation of a citizen "question period" at the start of city council meetings. He'll also be remembered for drawing the ire of mayor Shari Decter Hirst — once strongly enough that she threatened to "slap (him) on the back of the head so hard (his) head will spin." She later apologized.
Earlier this week, Ray Berthelette announced his intention to seek the seat.
