National nod for Sun photographer

A Brandon Sun photographer has been nominated for a National Newspaper Award.

Tim Smith's photo, of young Tatyanna Zazalak breathing through a mask due to the effects of Batten disease, was nominated as a finalist in the Feature Photography category.

Only three photos were nominated from across Canada. Smith is up against Tyler Anderson, from the National Post, for a photo of a northern Ugandan woman who had her ears and nose chopped off during the terror regime of the Lord’s Resistance Army; and Peter Power, from the Globe and Mail, for a photo of a woman at a palliative-care hospice embracing a social worker during the final hours of the woman’s mother.

Smith, who joined the Brandon Sun in October 2007, previously won in the same category two years ago.

He has been chronicling Tatyanna's story as a long-term project.

"I'm humbled," by the nomination, he said. "Maybe it will help spread more awareness of Batten disease."
