Pats roll over Wheat Kings

If Saturday night wasn't the low point of the season for the Brandon Wheat Kings then they came dangerously close to scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The Wheat Kings found a way to turn a two-goal lead into a 7-3 loss to the Regina Pats in a battle of teams that were tied for last place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference.

Leading 3-1 midway through the game after taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play with goals 47 seconds apart, the Wheat Kings proceeded to surrender six unanswered goals at Westman Place.

"It's very disappointing," said Wheat Kings captain Ryan Pulock, who scored the goal that put Brandon up 3-1. "We had two huge power-play goals to get us to 3-1 and then from there on we just shut down.

"I think guys just figured it was over. After getting two quick goals like that we thought (the Pats) were going to shut it down but they never gave up and that's what happenes, I guess."

Lane Scheidl scored twice to get the Pats (20-30-3-3) back on even ground, with his second goal coming with only 20 seconds left in the second period. Regina then dominated the third, outshooting the Wheat Kings 15-6 and tacking on four more goals.

Defenceman Eric Roy,who scored the first two Brandon goals, said the turnover-plagued Wheat Kings (20-33-2-2) failed to recover after giving up the lead when they should have refocused for the third period.

"You just have to battle through it," he said. "We didn't respond the way we wanted to. It was a fresh period, (tied) going into the third. We just have to respond better next time."

Braden Christoffer also scored twice as the Pats jumped into 10th place in the conference, while Morgan Klimchuk, Adam Brooks and Dyson Stevenson — who netted the winner 7:02 into the third — had the other Regina goals.

Linemates Scheidl and Klimchuk also had assists to combine for five points and Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said his team needed to do a better job of keeping the Pats' top two scorers under wraps.

"That line got some life on the turnover in the second period where (Scheidl) came in and got a goal for them and it woke them up," Gylywoychuk said of the goal that cut Brandon's lead to 3-2. "… I thought we had kept them in check for most of the game and we weren't good for the remainder of the game against that line."

Now 2-2 on their seven-game homestand, the Wheat Kings host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday (7 p.m., Westman Place).

ONE-TIMERS: Rookie Brandon C Jayce Hawryluk had two assists to stretch his point-scoring streak to six games (five goals, six assists) including five straight two-point outings … Wheat Kings G Curtis Honey stopped 21 of 27 shots before being replaced by midget call-up Jordan Papirny, who stopped two of the three he faced including a breakaway by Pats C Chandler Stephenson … Brandon was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Regina was 0-for-1 … The Wheat Kings scratched D Tyler Yaworski (Game 3 of six-game suspension), G Corbin Boes (knee, indefinite), LW/RW Richard Nejezchleb (hand, indefinite) and C Tyrel Seaman (concussion, indefinite) … Pats scratches included D Colton Jobke (knee) and D Luke Fenske, who suffered a concussion a week earlier from the hit that resulted in Yaworski's suspension.
