Two family pets died in a smoky house fire late Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say that the pets likely died of smoke inhalation during the fire, which at this point doesn't appear to have been suspicious in nature.

Firefighters were called to the home, in the 600-block of 12th Street, at about 5 p.m. yesterday, where they could see smoke and flames as soon as they arrived.

After breaching a side wall of the home, they were able to put out the fire; it caused extensive damage to the kitchen area, where it was mostly contained, but there was smoke damage throughout.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, and no damage estimate has been released.

Emergency services, including the Office of the Fire Commissioner, continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
