For the first time in more than four decades, the Canadian Plowing Championships will be held — literally — on Manitoba soil.

The tiny community of Kemnay, just west of Brandon, will host the championships in early October.

First up, though, will be the 2012 Manitoba Plowing Match, which will also be held just northwest of Kemnay, on Sept. 29–30. The horse, vintage and conventional world-style classes are open to any competitor. Entry for spectators is free.

Manitoba Provincial Plowing Association will then host the 2012 Canadian Plowing Championships from Oct. 4–6. Qualified competitors from British Columbia to New Brunswick will take part in the conventional and reversible tractor classes.

But to make the occasion memorable the Manitoba association is also holding special horse plowing and vintage classes, which are open to plowers from across the country

Would-be entrants should contact Barb Boundy, at Box 655 in Boissevain, or by email at mb.plowing@hotmail.ca.

The Canadian championships were last in Manitoba in 1970.
