Police in standoff in west end

Not many details are available at this point, but it appears police are involved in a standoff with a man inside a house on the 100 block of 24th Street.

Police have blocked off streets in the area and evacuated residents from nearby homes. The Tactical Response Unit is on scene and residents have been asked to avoid the area, but the situation couldn't be described as "tense."

As of about half an hour ago, TRU members were casually standing by a cube van and their rifles aren't trained on the home.

Area residents say they first saw police cars in the area around 11 p.m. last night. This morning, around 9 a.m., they were asked to leave their homes. They said a man lives at the two-storey home that is the centre of police attention. Police have been known to attend the home in the past, they said.

There are no reports of any shots being fired, nor is there any confirmed word of whether or not there are weapons or other people inside the home with the suspect.

This story will be updated when more information is available. An update is expected soon.

11:50 a.m. - Update - Police have maneuvered what appears to be a robot to drop a bullhorn or loudspeaker into the street near the home. Police now appear to be trying to speak to the suspect using the bullhorn. Police could be heard using the bullhorn to urge the resident to answer his phone.

1:27 p.m. Contact has been made with the man in the house. The Brandon Sun has learned that it's believed no one else is in the house with the suspect. Whether or not the suspect has access to weapons is still not known. TRU members, however, are still in a casual state and are not training their weapons on the house.

We have learned that the home is that of a 39-year-old man who is wanted on charges of assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, forcible confinement and overcoming or resisting by choking. Those offences were allegedly committed yesterday.

We are not, however, in a position yet to confirm that the man involved in the standoff is the man who lives at the home, and so we are not naming him at this point.

1:40 p.m. Brandon police are declining to release any details at this point or confirm the information we've gathered so far except to describe it as an "isolated incident."
